This weekend, in Toronto, at the York Mills Collegiate Invitational Junior Volleyball Tournament, the Widdifield Wildcats placed first among 11 tier-one Toronto area teams. However, the Wildcats started off slowly on Friday against Mowat, winning only one of the two sets they played against the Toronto team. But that set was to be the only set the Wildcats lost all day. They moved on to face Agincourt and defeated them handily and their next game pitted them against Victoria Park, whom they also had no trouble taking down in two sets.

The quarter final game against Humberside saw the Wildcats hold back any offensive attack from the opposing team with some super blocks and excellent defensive play by the Cats. In the semi-final game, another Wildcat team from Westview was the challenger, but Widdifield came out with some power hitting and some strong serving and Westview just couldn’t keep up with the pace of the boys from North Bay.

In the final game, Widdifield faced off against the St. Mary’s Eagles from Kitchener. The Wildcats entered the game with tremendous enthusiasm and Cole Niemi’s opening kill further fired up the team, as well as the North Bay parents who stomped on the bleachers to encourage their children toward victory. The remainder of the set saw some large blocks by Ryan Etches and an incredible crush by Eric Bowman as he capitalized on an overpass by St. Mary’s and hammered the ball into the ground, cementing Widdifield’s dominance in this tournament.

The scores of the final sets were 25-19 and 25-20 in favour of Widdifield.

Widdifield's setter Tanner O’ Brien, was awarded the tournament M.V.P.

The defending NDA champion Wildcats will have home court advantage this week as the set to defend that title.
