The West Ferris Trojans erased a nine point second quarter deficit and went on to a 54-43 victory over the Chippewa Raiders in game two of the NDA senior boys basketball championships winning the best-of-three final in two straight.

It was a tight first half with the Raiders leading 21-20, however the second half the Trojans came out firing and for the Trojans that was the turning point of the game.

“We came out shooting really well, played tough defence, got a few stops, it was a big momentum change and it helped us out in the end,” said the Trojans John Gore who finished with 14 points. Dustin Anthony led all scorers with 16 points.

Trojans head coach Larry Tougas wasn’t overly impressed with his squad’s first half performance although he knew the Raiders would be fired up on their home court.

“We felt they were going to come out real strong,” said Tougas.

“In a game like this in front of their own fans we felt the first quarter was pretty critical I told the kids at half time that if we were only down by one we’d be in good shape I thought we could win the second half just because we have a little more depth and I thought that was a good scenario for us. We could have easily been down a lot more and I thought we were lucky to be down by only one.”

The Raiders were led offensively by David Greco with 13 points. Greco made some key buckets in first half but in the second half the Raiders could only muster 22 points and couldn’t outgun the Trojans.

“They are a great shooting team and we did a great job against them for about three quarters of the game and they got hot for about five minutes and that was the difference in the game,” said Raiders head coach Tim Simpson.

“But our kids played hard tonight and I congratulate West Ferris they are a good team.”
