Success for Ferris Family Karate in Sudbury

‘Perhaps the best part of the day was the smiles’

A group of Ferris Family Karate students went to a tournament in Sudbury, Cambrian College Campus, for the Canadian Budoka Karate Championships on May 14.

Adam Arbiter, one of the Sensei at Ferris Family Karate says they  are new to the competition elements of karate but competed with students from all over the area in three different categories: Kata, Weapons and Sparring.

"All of our competitors did a fantastic job and represented our club with pride, discipline and honour," said Arbiter.

"Perhaps the best part of the day were the smiles."

Notable achievements are as follows:

  • Brown belt, Joel Mathieu: third place in Weapons where he performed with a staff (bo)
  • Green belt, Oakley Arbiter: second in Weapons using a Kali stick and third in kata
  • Jr Black belt, Jo-zef Mathieu: Fourth in weapons using Nunchaku and sparring
  • Sensei Adam Arbiter: third in Kata
  • Orange belt Talulla Hirvilammi-Smith: fourth in kata 
  • Orange belt, Nathan Fotheringham: Fourth in Kata and weapons using a kali stick
