The Summer Peewee AAA hockey team from North Bay ended their season on an extremely positive note by capturing the title at the Can Lan International Spring Meltdown tournament over the weekend in Toronto.

Chris Faucon broke a 3-3 tie in overtime to give the North Bay squad the victory in the event final against a team from Southern Ontario. Head coach Randy Edmonds says it was a great way to finish the team’s inaugural season.

“Our goal was never to win a tournament but develop the kids and give them exposure they have not received before,” said Edmonds.

“In that sense we achieved our goal, Dustin Hummel was excellent in goal as he made several key saves in the third period and in overtime to give us the chance to win. Devon Marshall finished the final game with a goal and two assists as a defenseman he turned in an excellent game.”

The North Bay team finished with three wins and one loss during the round robin portion of the tournament and defeated a team from Simcoe to make it to the final.

Edmonds hopes to expand the spring hockey program in North Bay, with teams in Novice, Atom and Peewee next year.

“We learned a lot about how spring hockey works and what tourneys to attend and not attend .Spring hockey all across Canada is very big and we are now putting North Bay back on the hockey map in Canada,” he said.
