A few of the Nipissing Lakers were on hand Sunday to help the North Bay North Stars with their fundraising efforts. The “Gockey” event took place at the Skater’s Edge store with the team collecting pledges based on minutes of play.

The game of Gockey is played with mini sticks and a squash ball.

North Stars team Manager Sharon Fung felt the team did very well.

"Some of them find it difficult to go out and ask for pledges but we think it is important for them to get involved and take some ownership of the team," said Fung.

Money raised will go towards offsetting the cost of attending the annual Special Hockey International tournament in Orangeville in April.

"The program has only one tournament a year but it is a big one with 700 plus athletes convening over four days. We try and subsidize our families as much as possible," said Fung.

"The team really appreciates the support of Skater’s Edge management and it means a lot to the group to have the Lakers players come out and join them as well."
