The 2008 Nancy Greene Ski Racing Finals were held at Laurentian Ski Hill in North Bay this past weekend. Over one hundred alpine ski racers aged 6 to 11 years competed for five Northern Ontario alpine ski clubs including Timmins, North Bay, Sudbury, and two clubs from Sault Ste. Marie.
Over the course of the weekend, the athletes raced one run of paneled slalom and three runs of giant slalom.
Individual placings were used to determine team scores. After all the calculations were complete the Searchmont Ski Runners captured the Team Trophy with the North Bay Ski Racing Club finishing a close second. All participants were awarded participation medals.
The race ran exceptionally well until Laurentian Ski Hill’s only chairlift broke down on Saturday afternoon. The North Bay club organizers arranged for school bus transportation for coaches and racers so the race could continue on Sunday when the wrong part was shipped for repairs. Marisa Knox, race chair stated “We probably have the only ski hill where people can be transported by road from the bottom to the top of the hill. We’re grateful to all the volunteers who helped us keep things on time.” This race will be memorable for many!
