North Bay lifters head to Canadian Jr. Weightifting Championship

The Ontario Weightlifting Association is playing host to the 2009 Canadian Junior finals this coming Saturday, January 17, at the Variety Village Sport Complex in Scarborough.
The Ontario Weightlifting Association is playing host to the 2009 Canadian Junior finals this coming Saturday, January 17, at the Variety Village Sport Complex in Scarborough. The Ontario male and female squads feature nine lifters from the local Norsemen and Valkyries Weightlifting team. The remaining ten lifters, 4 females and 6 males, come from the three clubs in the Greater Toronto Area.

In the lighter male classes, a trio of West Ferris Secondary students will open up the contest for Ontario. Jordan Hickey and Jarret Cauchy are scheduled to lift in the 62 kilo class, while Jordan Scott has qualified in the 69 kilo division. At 77 kilos, Logan Baker, a St. Joseph’s – Scollard Hall student, will make his first ever appearance at the national level. Later, a pair of veterans, and medalists from last year, David Staniszewski and Kirt Trahan, will lift in their final Junior Nationals. Staniszewski is Ontario’s entry at 95 kilos, while Trahan will lift in the 105 kilo and under class.

On the female side Courtney Simkins and Stavrula Liritzis are entered in the 58 and 63 kilo classes, respectively. Both are in the running for medals. In a later session, Kayla Rose, a 19 year old, Canadore College Sport Conditioning student, will compete is the 75 kilo and under class.

Provincial team staff members include: Larry Sheppard as the team manager, with Samantha Scully and Ray Hamilton as coaches.
