North Bay Nordic Junior Racing Team athletes had a strong showing in their second provincial meet of the race season held at the North Bay Nordic Ski Club on January 17-18. More than 350 athletes participated from across Ontario and parts of Quebec. Adam Birosh, Aaron Birosh and Madison Fraser raced hard to find themselves on the podium with a third, second and third place finish respectively.

Liam Patterson gave an amazing performance, placing 9th and 6th while racing up a level up in the juvenile boys division. First year team member Nadine Perron cracked the top ten list in the 5 km skate race while new team member Molly Vandermeer offered great performances in the 5 and 3 km races of the junior girl’s category. Senior male team members Jake Porter, Greg Kilroy and Jon Winter each had strong races, finishing in the top half of the junior men category. Senior female team athletes Ava Rudachyk and Nel Vandermeer raced extremely well in the large junior women category.

The North Bay Nordic Junior Race Team is coached by Bob Porter, Sera Birosh and John Patterson. Athletes train six days a week, twelve months of the year. Their training program involves running, skiing (roller skiing in summer months), plyometric, balance and core strengthening exercises. Each athlete’s program is tailored to their age, ability and goals.

The team is now focused on preparing for their third provincial race of the season which will be held in Ottawa (Gatineau Park) on January 30 and 31.
