Lemon and Yeoman commit to Nipissing

The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team is pleased to announce the commitment of two more student-athletes for the 2009-2010 season. Sudbury’s Grant Lemon and Kenora’s Zach Yeoman have both accepted offers of admission, and will look to make an impact on the Lakers in the fall.

“Obviously we are very pleased to be getting these 2 guys,” said Lakers coach Grant Ross, “they are another pair of real quality student-athletes, and while they both play middle they offer different things to our program.”

Lemon stands at 6’4” and has a long reach to go with that height. He will bring the Lakers a tremendous net presence, both as a blocker and attacker. Lemon played for the Lo-Ellen Knights coached by North Bay native Tom Sutton. Sutton’s teams have done well at high school provincial championships and his club team just came off a gold medal performance at the OVA Provincial Championships in April.

Yeoman is another athlete familiar with success, as his high school team won the OFSAA single ‘A’ crown last fall.

According to Lakers co-captain Jamie VanderZande, while Yeoman might not be as tall as some of the other recruits, at 6’2” he is more than capable of holding his own.

“Zach is a big strong kid who moves well for a middle and has a heavy arm,” stated VanderZande.

Yeoman has been coached by former Nipissing and Canadore head coach Bob Kowal, which should help his transition coming out of high school.

“Bob runs a really good program up in Kenora; he places high expectations on his players and runs a post secondary style program. I think Zach has a chance to compete for a starting position and contribute significantly as a rookie,” added Ross.

Ross says there are still a few more athletes expected to commit for next year, but he is pleased with how the program is progressing.

“We are very happy with what we have coming back from last year, and with the addition of these two players we can only get better. We are expecting to pick a very big, athletic team from what should be a very competitive tryout in September.”
