The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team recorded a perfect 2-0 weekend on the road to kick off the 2018-19 OUA season, defeating the UOIT Ridgebacks and Queen’s Gaels.

On Friday, Nipissing needed extra time, but came away with a 2-1 victory over UOIT, despite dominating them in terms of shots and chances.

Jade Gauthier scored the team’s first goal of the season in the first period, with Ava Keis picking up the assist.

After UOIT tied it late in the period, the score remained 1-1 until the extra period.

Kaley Tienhaara ended the game midway through the extra frame, set up by Hunter Mosher, as the Lakers claimed the extra point and pick up the victory.

Danika Ranger made 26 saves, with the final shots reading 46-27 in favour of Nipissing.

Nipissing doubled their weekend success with another 2-1 victory, this time over the team that eliminated them in the post-season last year.

Nipissing got a pair of goals from Sam Strassburger on their way to the win.

After trailing 1-0 after the first, Strassburger scored once in the second period – with assists going to Bronwyn Bolduc and Katelyn Heppner – and once in the third to give Nipissing another win.

Her second goal was assisted by Bolduc once again, as well as Taylor McManus.

Both tallies came on the power play.

Ranger was solid once again, picking up the win by making 27 saves, while Nipissing directed 17 shots at the Gaels net.

After a successful weekend, Nipissing will host a pair of games – Ryerson Friday and Toronto Saturday – in their first home action of the season
