Lakers split weekend series

TORONTO - The Nipissing University Lakers volleyball teams split a pair of OCAA weekend games sweeping Sheridan 3-0 and were swept 3-0 by Humber.

Friday, the Lady Lakers powered passed Sheridan Friday 3-0 (25-17, 25, 17, 25-16) on the offense of Laura Hudson and Stefanie Hancock who scored 13 and 9 points respectively.

Saturday was a battled of the top two ranked teams in the province and a re-match of the past three provincial championships. The Lady Lakers put in a valiant effort but came up short as Humber defeated Nipissing 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-23) to hand the Lady Lakers their first loss of the season.

“We have been talking about limiting our unforced errors against good teams and unfortunately we made more then Humber and it cost us in the end,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle.

“I thought we had really solid performances from Stefanie Hancock and Ashley Hummel. They really kept us in the game. We know that we can play better as a team and we will use the loss to motivate us to get better.”

Stefanie Hancock led the offense with 16 points followed by Lucia Demarco and Liza Grenon who added 6 points each.

On the men’s side the Lakers also swept an improved Sheridan team 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17). The Lakers middle Drew Pahapill led the offense with 8 points while Adam Leblanc added seven points followed by Matt Rice with 5 points.

Laker Men swept

Saturday was also a tough test for the Lakers as they faced the third ranked Humber Hawks. The Hawks are currently undefeated in regular season play and played a solid match sweeping the Lakers 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-18).

The Lakers had some difficulty scoring points and unforced errors allowed the Hawks to run away with the final two sets.

Adam and Andre Leblanc led the offense with 6 points each while Matt Rice as added three.

The Lakers will be back in action Wednesday as they face their cross-campus rivals the Canadore Panthers. The women hit the court at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men at 8:00 p.m.
