The ice is about to heat up at Memorial Gardens, with the new Nipissing Lakers OUA hockey team set to begin a pre-training camp for local students on August 28. The pre-camp is also open to any out-of-town students interested in participating.

Full training camp begins on September 4.

“We’ll be dropping the puck on our first game in less than one month,” said head coach Mike McParland. “We have recruited a number of top caliber players, with a lot of OHL and junior hockey experience. The fans are excited and the players are really excited as well, so I anticipate a very intense, competitive training camp.”

Roughly 60 players are expected to attend camp.

“Certainly there are some players we’ve recruited who we expect to be leaders on the team. However, no one is guaranteed a spot. Everyone needs to come to camp prepared to work hard and compete for a spot. The players realize that this is the time to step up and show leadership by setting an example of hard work,” said McParland.

The pre-camp for local students runs August 28th to 30th. The main training camp begins September 4 and will run daily. Cuts will be made each day leading up to the Blue-White game on September 11. After that game the team will set the final roster.

Training camp will consist of fitness testing, conducted in coordination with Nipissing’s Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program, as well as weight training and on-ice workouts.
