Lakers edge Gee Gee's

OTTAWA, ON. - The Nipissing Lakers didn't allow a little bit of adversity to effect their game as they snuck out with a tight 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Gee Gee's to improve to 5-1-1 on the season.

Nathan Hewitt and Ryan Maunu scored for the Lakers, who played the game without OUA top scorer Matt Lahey, who will be out at least the next three weeks with a broken hand sustained during Friday's contest against Concordia.

Matt Hache made 26 saves in the victory. Sean Smyth was the only Gee Gee's forward to solve Hache on the night.

Brandon Happeney also missed the contest as the Lakers inserted local products Mike Vezina and Matt Lathem into the lineup for Saturday's game.

"This win was huge for us," said head coach Mike McParland.

"It allowed some other kids in the line-up who chipped in. It was a pretty solid team effort."

Despite the victory and a few votes to allow the Lakers some national recognition, McParland doesn't expect the impressive 5-1-1 record to get them ranked nationally yet.

"I think we are a long way from being nationally ranked," he admitted.

"We are still considered a newcomer in this league."
