SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – The Nipissing Lady Lakers (10-1) reached the holiday break with a decisive 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-16) win over the Sault Cougars (0-12) on Monday.

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – The Nipissing Lady Lakers (10-1) reached the holiday break with a decisive 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-16) win over the Sault Cougars (0-12) on Monday.

The victory was the Lakers sixth in a row with their only blemish of the season coming at the hands of their division rival Humber Hawks who walk away with a 3-1 decision at home.

The Lady Lakers travelled without starting right side player Liza Grenon who is recovering from an injury suffered several weeks ago and every player on the roster was able to see court time.

Rebecca Ramsay led the Lakers offence with 14 points while Lucia DeMarco and Chandra Massey added 11 and 8 points respectively.

“Our schedule was very challenging the first half,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle.

“We played the bulk of it on the road with league games and tournaments and that can be challenging.

It is not easy getting off the bus after 4-5 hours and going into to someone else’s barn and performing weekend after weekend. I give the team a lot of credit for being mentally tough and I am sure the break will do us all some good.”

The Lady Lakers will back in action January 6th as they host some exhibition matches against College de L’Abitibi- Temiscamingue from Rouyn-Noranda in Quebec. The Astrelles participate in the RSEQ (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) and sit in third place with a 5-3 record behind Sherbrooke (6-1) and power house FX Garneau (8-0).

The Lady Lakers will also host the 18th annual Lakers Volleyball Classic January 7th and 8th. A total of 24 teams from around the province will converge on the campus of Nipissing University and a new champion will be crowned as the Chippewa Raiders are unavailable to defend their title.
