WELLAND, ON - The Lady Lakers captured a silver medal at the Niagara Invitational over the weekend losing to Humber College 3-1 in the championship final.

The Lady Lakers didn’t drop a set arriving to the finals sweeping Durham, Redeemer, Loyalist and the Niagara Alumni.

The Lady Lakers went to Niagara knowing that this event would be a challenge after losing two players with ankle injuries.

“This was a tough week for us,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle.

“We lost two players in two days with injuries and didn’t have any practices to adjust our line-up. We knew that we would face some challenges however in general I thought we played fairly well for most of the tournament.

“In the final we didn’t follow our game plan and it showed. In a situation of change we need our veterans to increase the communication levels and take more of a leadership role on the court. We will take the time this week to make some adjustments and work on a few line-up combinations in preparations for our upcoming league games.”

The Lady Lakers remain the only undefeated team in women’s volleyball with a record of 8-0 however it is anticipated that the Lakers will drop to the number two spot in the provincial rankings because it was a best of five tournament format. The Lakers will have another opportunity to face Humber as the Lakers will travel to Toronto to face the Hawks in league play on February 4th.
