With Coach4Food behind target, former Scollard Hall Golden Bear sniper Ed Kilroy has once again given Tom Hedican's fundraiser a major shot in the arm. Kilroy, now CEO of Symcor Inc. in Toronto, has made a cash donation of $3,000. Kilroy has been a major supporter of the program in the past two years.

"This is just a testament to Ed's character," said Hedican. "Although Ed has become a highly successful businessman, he has not forgotten his roots and his community of North Bay. We are still going to struggle to break last year's record of 60,482 pounds but this certainly gives us a fighting chance."

Kilroy stated in an email to Hedican that "This is a very worthwhile program and we want to see you reach your goal."

In four practices back to back, the Powassan Hawks have also boosted the 2009 drive for the North Bay Food Bank. The Novice squad, sponsored by Antebi Professional Coaching Consulting, added 756 pounds, followed by the Atoms, sponsored by Account On Fullerton, adding 498 pounds. The Peewees then took to the ice, sponsored by Venasse Construction Ltd, and boosted Coach4Food by another 581pounds. The Midgets, sponsored by Marc Kern of Switzerland, capped off the evening with 579 more pounds.

All together, the Hawks and their sponsors, combined with Kilroy's major donation, have rocketed Hedican's fundraiser to beyond 10 tons, to 21,342 pounds.

Coach4Food was inspired by rock star Bruce Springsteen's work with food banks in Canada and the U.S.
