The Algonquin Barons openend their NDA junior football schedule with a 28-16 win over the West Ferris Trojans Friday evening at the Trojan Alumni Complex.

The Trojans scored on the opening drive as Phil Thesen found the end zone.

Detlev Himmelman added the two point convert to make it 8-0 Trojans. On the ensuing drive, however, the Barons ground attack led by fullback Junior Gauthier and tailbacks Mathieu Lavigne and Éric Joly marched the ball down the field and found the end zone on a 8 yard TD run by Gauthier. Jean-Michel Paulin booted the convert.

Shortly thereafter, Barons tailback Mathieu Lavigne found the corner and ran 50 yards for the major. The failed two point convert made it 15-8 Barons.

In the 3rd, the Trojans took advantage of a Barons’ goal-line fumble on 4th down and marched downfield for the touchdown. Phil Thesen again scored the major for the Trojans while Spencer Brear added a two point convert to make it 16-15 Trojans heading into the 4th quarter.

In the 4th, the Barons recovered a fumbled punt return inside the Trojans 30 yard line. The Barons capitalized on the turnover as Gauthier found the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. The failed two-point convert made it 21-16 Barons.

With 5 minutes remaining, the Barons defence led by Collin Glass, Joe Clément and Zach Wilkinson tightened up. A few plays later, the Barons recovered a Trojans fumble inside the West Ferris 20 yard line. Gauthier found the end zone for a third time with a 8 yard TD run, putting the game out of reach for the Trojans. Jean-Michel Paulin once again booted the convert.
