Kory Caya's shorthanded breakaway goal midway through the third period was the back breaker as the Nickel City Sons defeated the North Bay Trappers 6-3 at West Ferris arena on Sunday afternoon.

With Pascal Seguin out, Moyer implemented forward Mitchell Davis on the power play and Caya snuck off the bench and took a stretch pass and capitalized beating Trappers goalie Patrick Rochefort to make it 5-3.

The Trappers mixed up the lines but the trio of Roch Pellerin, Tyler Field and Dylan Staples did almost all the scoring on Sunday as Staples finished with a pair including a Brett Hull-like slapper in the middle frame that made the score 4-2 Nickel City, while Roch Pellerin followed up with a "roof job," to make it a 1 goal game after 40 minutes.

The Trappers dug themselves a hole in the first as the Sons were able to rattle off three straight goals after Dylan Staples had tied the game 1-1.

Sebastien Leroux, Ben Roy, and two from Caya gave the Sons the 3-goal lead after 20 minutes.

Patrick Rochefort came in and allowed the final two goals in the 3rd period in relief of Tanner Davis who was pulled after allowing the first 4 goals in the opening stanza.

The loss ends a disappointing regular season for the Trappers who finish in 7th spot in Great North Midget League standings with 21 points.

That record will mean the Trappers will open the playoffs on the road against the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.

The Trappers have given the Wolves problems this season and despite a pair of losses the Trappers played well against two of the "Big 3" in the GNML this weekend which included a 9-7 loss to the Soo North Stars on Saturday night.

"Our goaltenders have to step up and our veteran defenceman have to play better," Moyer said about his team.

"They just have to have more control and make smarter decisions with the puck," said Moyer.
