BURLINGTON, ON - For Matt Gordon this was almost as sweet as it gets. The veteran Bulldogs quarterback guided a short-staffed Bulldogs team to a close 14-13 win over the Oakville Longhorns Saturday night.

For Gordon, it’s not only the first win of the year, but the first time in his 10 seasons of senior football that he’s been on the winning end of a game against the Oakville Longhorns.

“It’s fantastic, the first time we’ve beaten (Will) Thompson and (Mark) Demerling,” said Gordon about beating the Oakville team that took a leave of absence from the league last season.

Gordon was responsible for almost all the Bulldogs scoring and made a crucial kick to keep his team ahead in the dying seconds.

The Longhorns got on the board in the first half after a muffed punt they were able to punch it in for a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs evened the score on 4th down on the final play of the second quarter when Matt Gordon called his own number on a quarterback sneak on the 1-yard line. After the extra point, the score was 7-7 at halftime.

The scored stayed that way until about the 8 minute mark of the 4th quarter when Gordon connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to cornerback turned receiver Russ Burns to give the Bulldogs a key 14-7 win with the successful convert.

However, the Longhorns came back after a long drive, they found the Bulldogs end zone with 3 minutes left in regulation but the home side was unable to hit on the key conversion leaving it 14-13 Bulldogs.

The Longhorns were able to drive down the field in final minute and were able to set up for a 25-yard field goal which went wide right and was promptly kicked out of the end zone by Gordon to avoid the rouge.

Extra points in the Standings too?

The Bulldogs may be adding another victory this weekend. The team has protested last Saturday’s home game against the Raiders as the visitors allegedly used an illegal quarterback in a 29-26 win over the Bulldogs.

According to the Bulldogs, Kelly Hughes QB with the Raiders, was not signed in time to play last Saturday’s game. He was not listed on the roster but played last Saturday

That could turn a 1-4 record to 2-3. The league is expected to make a ruling on the ineligible player soon.
