Andrew Beattie followed up his Invitational title last month with a victory at the Northern Golf Association Men’s Amateur event held on the weekend at the North Bay Golf and Country Club.
Beattie was up by 3 after 12 holes against Timmins golfer Dave McLaughlin in the Match Play event final and held on to win by 2 on the 17th hole on Sunday night.

“We were missing some big names like Vince Palladino and Ricky Allen but it’s an awesome feeling anytime you can win an event on your home course,” Beattie said after the win.

“I was just really concerned about striking the ball well and everything else would just fall into place.”

Beattie’s road to the title took him throw a pair of the top golfers in the north – defeating Jay Jewett from Sudbury in the quarterfinals Saturday and long ball hitter Brandon Christo from New Liskeard in the semi-final.

Turning Point

Beattie could very well have been sitting in the clubhouse all day on Sunday. The North Bay golfer was down by 2 on the 14th hole against Jewett in the quarters but he says his approach shot on 15 changed the momentum as he lofted a 95 yard sand wedge shot 20 feet past the hole but on the wet greens it sucked back within 3 feet of the hole and a tap in for birdie.

Beattie went on to defeat Jewett in a one-hole playoff to move on to the semi-finals.

Back to Back

Defending NGA title holder Jordie Leggett lost to Brandon Christo in the semi-final. The North Bay Golfer broke a 27-year drought for North Bay golfers by winning the Northern Amateur last year at the Idlewylde Golf and Country Club in Sudbury.

Now North Bay golfers have won the prestigious event back to back.
