The Algonquin Barons Senior Girls Basketball team drew first blood in their best of three semi-final by downing the visiting West Ferris Trojans 32-30 on Thursday night at the Algonquin gym. Chelsey Tremblay led the way offensively for the Barons as she poured in a game high 13 points. Camille Courville added 8, while Jolinne Maisonneuve and Meagan Willard had 5 points and 4 points respectively. Ashley Zen led the way for the Trojans with 11 points, while Melissa Blackned added 10.

“I thought we both teams played well, especially defensively," said Barons coach Tim Lowe.

“Nadine Perron held Sarah Pledge to 3 points, while Ferris used their team defense to shut down Jolinne”, he added. "I'm really please with the way our rookies played, especially Chelsey and Camille and our veteran Stephanie Desrochers came up huge rebounds," said Lowe.

The game was tied at the end of the first quarter at 8 point each and then the Barons outscored the Trojans 12-6 in the 2nd quarter to go into halftime with a 20-14 lead. During the 3rd stanza, they managed to up the lead to 10 points, but the Trojans fought back and cut the lead to one point with just over a minute to go in the game. Both teams failed to score, until Jolinne iced it with a foul shot with 6.8 seconds left in the game.

“They are an extremely well coached and well prepared team," added Lowe.

“This series is a long way from over. We chunked a few shots in the second half due to their defensive pressure, but we managed to battle and come away with the victory. I'm hoping that we shoot a little better on Monday night, but all in all a good win."

Game two goes Monday, November 3rd at West Ferris S.S. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
