This week’s athlete spotlight belongs to Katie Sargent, the Grade 12 student is from West Ferris Secondary School. Katie is being spotlighted for her extraordinary mixture of academic and athletic accomplishments.

Katie is a three-sport athlete, who has been a captain in every sport she's participated in. Throughout high school, Katie has been involved in Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer. And on top of being named Captain, this well-rounded student has garnered MVP nod's in both Basketball and Volleyball.

One conversation with Katie will surely illustrate the reasons why this young green and white student has had success in anything she has ever tried. Throughout her interview with Baytoday, Katie demonstrated the undeniable reasons as to why she a role model throughout West Ferris High School. The easy-going, happy go-lucky demeanour Katie demonstrates is something that every coach dreams of having throughout their line-up.

Being named team captain in every sport she has taken on in high school is definitely a testament to her leadership skills and likable personality. And being noticed for her leadership abilities has not gone unnoticed by this humble student, who feels being named team captain is something of a special feat.

"With both my Coaches and Teammates picking me as captain, it means a lot. And being named MVP in both Basketball and Volleyball, it shows that all the hard work makes it worth it in the end," says Sargent.

Along with being a leader on the field, Sargent is not slouch in the classroom, maintaining an 85% average and heading of to the Kinesiology program at Lakehead University, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Katie also has aspirations for entering Lakehead's Medical school after graduating from her Undergraduate program. These may be lofty goals for a high school student but goals that will likely be realized for this Trojan student athlete.

The Sargent name is not an uncommon last name in North Bay, as Katie's late father Brian was a popular teacher in the Near North School Board, and a great influence in Katie's life. Katie views her dad as her inspiration and the individual who steered her towards sports.

"He has been my coach and got me into sports. My Dad has been there for everything, and he was my inspiration," stated Sargent.

In her last year at West Ferris, Sargent has set one goal for herself, one of being placed amongst West Ferris' great athletes on "The Wall."

The Wall is dedicated to those who are victorious in any sport, and viewed as the crowning achievement for succeeding in NDA sports or beyond.

"This is my last year, and I would really like to get on 'The Wall," said the proud Trojan.

Although Katie's high school life is about to come to an end, the rest of her life is about to begin. The young student is a very focused individual who has balanced both academics and athletics, and has had nothing but success throughout her days at West Ferris.

Katie Sargent is another example of a local student/athlete thriving in the spirit of competition and setting a great example for her peers.
