On September 3, 2016, members of the Powassan Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were directing traffic on Main Street, Powassan, during a community event.

Two charged with impaired on long weekend

POWASSAN - On Sept. 3, 2016, members of the Powassan Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were directing traffic on Main Street, Powassan, during a community event.  At approximately 11:15 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle at the traffic point and when speaking with the driver, the officer detected an odour of alcohol.

After further investigation, the driver of the vehicle, Melissa Laplante, age 40 of Powassan, Ontario, was arrested and charged with Driving With More than 80 Mgs. of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC).

She was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Sept. 13, 2016.

On Sept. 4, 2016, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a member of the North Bay OPP detachment was northbound on Highway 11, City of North Bay, when a vehicle passed the cruiser at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle was stopped by police and, upon further investigation, the driver, Francesco De Rose, age 26, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was arrested and charged with Driving With More Than 80 Mgs. of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253 (1)(b) CC.

He was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Sept. 13, 2016.

The OPP are reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver that is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
