DON’T GET CAUGHT IN “THE NET”

North Bay, Ont.
Computers are fun and informative, but both adults and children need to be aware of the dangers of going on-line. Some simple steps can prevent kids and adults from becoming prey to scams and on-line strangers.

Computers should be kept in an area of the house where everyone can use it and be seen. Children should ask for adult permission prior to using the internet.

Blocking programs, such as CyberSitter, Netnanny or CyberPatrol are available for your protection. The best prevention is a parent spending time on the net with the children and learning about the internet together.

Remember the person that you chat with on the computer is a STRANGER. This person remains a STRANGER until you know them personally. Never arrange to meet someone you have met on the internet.

Never respond to messages or bulletin items that are rude, obscene, threatening, frighten you or make you feel uncomfortable.

Remember people do not normally give anything away for free. Never agree to meet someone to get something.

Never give out personal information, such as your name, address and phone number. Even information like the town you live in, the name of your school and what clubs you belong to can give people information about you that could harm you.

Remember, threatening to hurt someone on the internet is the same as saying it face to face. It's a CRIME!
