On Sept. 1 an OPP officer was on general patrol on Lindquist Line, Powassan, when she initiated a traffic stop of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

Male charged in theft of tools

MATTAWA – On July 21, 2016 the Mattawa Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were seeking the assistance in a theft that occurred on a property located on Highway 656, Mattawan Township.

It was reported that unknown culprit(s) gained entry to three trailers on this property sometime between July 13 at 6:30 p.m. and July 14 at 6:00 a.m. 

Items taken were:

  • Red Milwaukee hard container box
  • 18 volt hammer drill
  • Makita TW 1000 torque drill
  • Stihl Rock Boss MD
  • Briggs 8000 WGE  Generator
  • 2 wrenches (15/16 to 2” and a 6 - 25 mm)
  • Allen key set
  • Electric circular saw

Through further investigation the Makita drill and wrench set were recovered. All other items remain outstanding.

Justin Thomas, age 25, of Mattawa has been arrested and charged with Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code. The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Mattawa, Ontario on September 7, 2016.

Charges laid in barricade incident

MATTAWA – On Sept. 1, 2016, officers from the Mattawa Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence on Park Street in Mattawa, Ontario. 

Upon police arrival at the scene, police located an injured male outside of a residence.  He was transported to the hospital by North Bay and District Ambulance Service to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The accused had barricaded himself in the residence and was refusing to cooperate with police. Numerous resources, including the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), Crime Unit, Negotiators and Canine Unit, responded in the attempt to facilitate a peaceful surrender.  After some negotiations, the male surrendered to police and was taken into custody without further incident.

Travis Kidd, age 34, of Mattawa, Ontario, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault contrary to section 268 of the Criminal Code.

He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on September 2, 2016, for a bail hearing. The investigation is still ongoing.

Charges laid against ATV driver

POWASSAN - On Sept. 1, 2016, at approximately 12:45 a.m., an officer of the Powassan Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on general patrol on Lindquist Line, Powassan, when she initiated a traffic stop of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

During the traffic stop, it was determined that the driver had consumed alcohol. As a result of the investigation, Richard Buckley age 44 of Powassan, was arrested and charged with Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay, Ontario, on September 13, 2016.

The OPP are reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver that is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
