21 CHARGED FOR OFF ROAD PASSING

(North Bay, ON) On Thursday October 9th, 2003 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit based out of North Bay were monitoring traffic on the bypass between the Highway 17 off-ramp and Seymour Street watching for vehicles driving on the gravel shoulder.

In the one hour period, the unit charged 21 people with “Pass Off Roadway” under the Highway Traffic Act (H.T.A.).

The fine for this infraction is $110.00.
So far, the North Bay Traffic and Marine Unit has laid 66 charges in the last two weeks.

The problem was identified after someone almost became involved in a motor vehicle collision when they were cut off by motorists traveling up the shoulder towards Seymour Street.

The North Bay OPP would like to remind you that this common, yet illegal, driving manoeuvre poses a risk to drivers making the right merge onto Seymour Street because they are not expecting to be overtaken by vehicles driving illegally on the shoulder of the highway.
