On April 14, at approximately 11:35 p.m., North Bay OPP officers were conducting a RIDE spot check on Highway 17 in North Bay.

Officers stopped a vehicle that looked as if it was attempting to evade the RIDE program.

While speaking with the driver, officers detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. The driver was arrested at the scene for driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in his blood and for possession of suspected drugs.

He was taken to the North Bay OPP Detachment for breath tests. The tests revealed that he had over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

As a result of the police investigation, Michel Girard, 29, of Timmins, has been charged with:

  • Driving with more than 80 mg of alcohol in blood
  • Possession of a schedule II substance - cannabis resin - over 1g and
  • Possession of a schedule II substance - cannabis marijuana - over 30g.

Girard was issued a 90-day automatic drivers licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on April 24.
