The LGBTQ Pride planning is getting underway for North Bay.

“We’re excited to get things going here in Nipissing, in the city of North Bay,” says Henri Giroux, North Bay and District Labour Council President, regarding planning for an annual community-based Pride event.

“So many people across the region have encouraged labour to facilitate a Pride planning strategy, so that’s what we’re doing.”

Unions have a rich history when it comes to teaching and promoting human rights, and LGBTQ equity is no exception, says a news release from the labour group.

"Over the years unions have built into their democratic structures ways for equity-seeking groups to have important and lasting decision making power. Unions believe in social equity and it makes perfect sense that they help with events like Pride.

“That’s why we’re inviting anyone interested in starting something really great for our diverse community to join the planning conversation next week,” says Giroux. “The Labour Council hopes to eventually become a regular community contributor to an annual Pride event, but for now, we’ll take the lead.”

The Pride planning meeting is Monday, June 5, at 5:30 at Nipissing University in room A244.
