President of the Powassan Agricultural Society, James Hilton, has held the position for the past three years but attended the fair as a young lad.

“I was an agricultural member when I was a child, displaying and showing cattle with my dad. So it’s been a long time,” laughed Hilton.

Keeping children interested and wanting to come back year after year, is key to keeping the tradition alive.

“We like to see the children have fun and we’re trying every year to make it bigger and better for the children to be here. We had a barrel racing demonstration by area boys and girls. We have all kinds of activities for the children from face painting to balloon animals, wildlife displays, even reptiles. And all kinds of competitions, basically anything they can grow or make.”

The Northern Horse Pull Association was another crowd favourite.

“What makes the fair so successful is the efforts of our volunteers who keep it going every year, trying to keep the tradition going. I think it’s a great thing for people to come and view and have fun.”
