OPP Urge Students to Have a Safe Graduation Celebration

(MATTAWA, ON) – Members of the North Bay, Powassan and Mattawa Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police would like to congratulate all students who will be graduating from Grade 8, high school and post secondary institutions this year.  Graduation is a time to celebrate accomplishments with family and friends.  It is also a time to think about enjoying the celebrations in safety.

The OPP would like to remind students that officers will be focusing their attention on those who fail to make safety a priority when out celebrating.  Officers will be monitoring “pit and bush parties” in the upcoming weeks to prevent unruly celebrations which have a potential for violence, mischief and risk of injury and/or death.   Strict enforcement will be given to underage drinking, trespassing, property damage, drinking and driving, offences under the Controlled Drugs & Substance Act and other actions that put people or property at risk.

Plan your graduation celebration with safety in mind.  Have a designated driver, stay the night, call a cab or someone else who is sober.  Play it safe and avoid risks that can undermine everything you’ve worked hard to achieve.
