Monday 25 May 2015 (North Bay, Ontario) – Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre of Nipissing, in partnership with the North Bay Police Service, invites the public to participate in its fourth annual “No one asks for it!” awareness walk on Thursday May 28th.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the corner of Main and Fraser, with a few welcoming words.

The walk will follow shortly thereafter. Participants will head east on Main Street, then continue on Sherbrooke Street to Worthington. The walk will end at Amelia Rising at 101 Worthington Street East with a small reception.

“Everyone is invited to join us for this downtown walk,” said Brenda Quenneville, Executive Director, Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre. “Show your support by wearing purple, by making and bringing “No One Asks for it!” signs or banners, or by writing chants, songs or poems. Help us spread the word that sexual assault will not be tolerated in our community.”

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The “No one asks for it!” walk is held annually in May to coincide with Sexual Assault Awareness month. The goal of the walk is to raise public awareness on the effects of sexual violence as a public health, human rights and social justice issue and to reinforce the need for prevention efforts.

The expression “No one asks for it!” brings attention to the fact that victims should not be blamed for the illegal actions of others. What a woman wears, how late she is out at night, or whether she left her drink unsupervised at a bar does not give another person the right to sexually assault her.
