MP JAY ASPIN ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR AN ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THE LATCHFORD DAM

Latchford June 12, 2015 – Jay Aspin, MP for Nipissing-Timiskaming announced today on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and FedNor $44,100 to enable the Town of Latchford to complete a preliminary plan and conceptual design for the operation of the Latchford Generating Station for hydro power.

“Replacement of end-of-life infrastructure is a key priority of our government,” said MP Jay Aspin. “This study will build upon this required infrastructure and create a plan and design for economic activity for the region resulting in a revenue stream for the four community partners involved. I am pleased that our  government is supporting the development of this economic opportunity.”

The study will build upon the previous significant infrastructure investment in the Latchford Dam to repair the structure. The study will be used to determine the feasibility for Latchford and the partnering communities of Coleman Township, Temagami First nation and Timiskaming First Nation to own and operate the Latchford Control Dam.

“Thanks to FedNor, we are exploring a new opportunity that could lead to some exciting revenue generation opportunities,” said George Lefebvre, Mayor of Latchford. “The four communities are collaborating on this opportunity. It could benefit us all for years to come.”

The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP), which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development and growth. Since 2011, over $100 million in federal funding has been invested in infrastructure projects like the Latchford Dam in projects throughout Nipissing-Timiskaming.
