North Bay Hydro and Greening Nipissing handing out free seedlings

Working with community partners to make Nipissing Green

NORTH BAY, ON – As part of the Tree Planting Program, North Bay Hydro, with community partners such as the City of North Bay, Greening Nipissing and TD Canada Trust, will be handing out free seedlings to North Bay residents at the North Bay Farmers Market this Saturday June 27th.  The public can visit the Greening Nipissing tent from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm to learn more about the program and to pick up their seedling.

The Tree Planting Program is meant to help increase the tree canopy as North Bay Hydro is pruning and removing trees that present a hazard to power lines.  North Bay Hydro, Greening Nipissing, the City of North Bay and TD Canada Trust have 500 seedlings that they will be giving to residents with instructions on how to take care of them along with where to plant plant them in relation to power lines.  The seedlings are only available to North Bay residents and those picking up a seedling will be required to show ID to qualify.

“Removing and pruning trees around high voltage power lines is necessary to ensure public safety and reliability. By working with our community partners including Greening Nipissing, TD Canada Trust and the City of North Bay, this tree planting program will maintain and improve the tree canopy in the urban part of North Bay. Healthy trees, in the right location away from power lines help beautify our City and reduce the impacts of climate change” states Todd Wilcox, Chief Operating Officer of North Bay Hydro.

North Bay Hydro connected with Greening Nipissing to develop a 10 year plan to maintain and even increase North Bay’s canopy.  With funding and support from the City of North Bay and TD Canada Trust, this program will provide residents with trees as well as planting trees and shrubbery in City parks and community areas.

Vijanti Ramlogan Murphy with Greening Nipissing shared that “We want to empower the community to help expand North Bay's tree canopy.  By giving residents seedlings and the information to plant and care for them, we are involving them in the tree planting program and the opportunity to contribute to making North Bay green.”

Along with visiting the Farmers Market to pick up a seedling, residents can call North Bay Hydro at 705.474.8100 ext. 271 to request a mature tree.  The public will be able to see where trees are planted on the Community Trees Map on the North Bay Hydro website.  Residents who plant seedlings can add their tree to the map by calling North Bay Hydro at 705.474.8100 x 271.
