Cobalt April 15, 2015 – Jay Aspin, MP for Nipissing-Timiskaming made two announcements today on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and FedNor and the Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development to strengthen the economic development capability and capacity for Cobalt, Coleman Township and Latchford and provide assistance for seniors in Cobalt.

“The municipalities in my region are amongst the first to benefit from this new program announced last fall by our FedNor Minister,” said MP Jay Aspin. “The creation of jobs and the improvement of the economy of all the communities in my region were two of  my key motivations for becoming a Member of Parliament. This funding moves me that much closer to that goal.”

An investment of $301,500, provided through FedNor’s Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario (CIINO), will enable Cobalt, Latchford and Coleman, to hire an economic development officer (EDO) to implement key economic development growth initiatives for the region such as: attracting private sector investment to the area; creating a marketing plan to promote tourism; developing industrial parks in Latchford and in Coleman Township.

It’s wonderful that the federal government is helping small communities,” said Mayor Tina Sartoretto. “We are working together to build the economy of Northern Ontario. This funding will help us to bring some plans forward so that we can attract business development to the area.”

Under the New Horizons Program, the Golden Age Club Hall of Cobalt also received $19,553 to support repairs and renovations of their facility. The Program supports organizations for community-based projects that are led or inspired by seniors. The purpose of the program is to allow seniors to participate more fully in their communities and maintain a higher quality of life.
