North Bay Pride is raising funds on April 16 at The Davedi Club by hosting a drag brunch.

“As many people know, drag performers have been under attack by sharing misinformation and judgment not based on fact for a very long time," said Jason Maclennan, Communications Director for North Bay Pride.

"Recently, the hate against drag performers has been more in your face, than ever before. Online hate comments, protests at drag shows and drag queen story time have made the 2SLGBTQ+ community very frustrated as the misinformation is not what our community is about. We are about love. We are about equity, and we are about inclusion.

"Drag performances have been around for thousands of years and no drag performer has ever been charged with a crime during a show. We at North Bay Pride stand with our community and understand how important pride is to combat all this hate and ignorance, so we decided to raise some funds to help make North Bay Pride bigger and better this September by hosting a drag brunch. We are supporting our local performers, which everyone should support local when we can.”

“Raising funds for events and causes within our community is something all drag performers take pride in," says the drag performer known as Dysphoria, who won last year's Drag Contest.

"We are here to help our community; show our community we love them and support them. We stand together against hate and stand together for equity and inclusion. The constant attacks on drag performers and the trans community are disturbing and not based on facts. You do not see drag performers running into a school carrying a gun and shooting kids like we did recently in the USA. We are people doing a job and usually a job we love doing. Drag performers have entertained people for years, like Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, and even Jack Lemon and Bob Hope dressed in drag. Where this false narrative about drag performers came from is beyond me.”

“I am excited to stand with the drag performers and put together a show that entertains people," explained Mackenzie Drive, the host of the drag brunch. "We are a fun time. We know who our audiences are and we perform for them. North Bay Pride is a small city pride doing big city things. I think everyone will be surprised by some of these performers and I get to share one of my favourite songs. Who would not want to support local and have a great afternoon of music and entertainment? “
