Canadore College launches its ninth performance season of its contemporary theatre company, Rep 21, later this month.

This year’s playbill features Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play, a three-part epic performed over two days, that explores the intersection of politics, religion and theatre. The play takes place in three acts that cover three different eras: Elizabethan England, Nazi Germany and late 20th century America.

Passion Play will be performed by the 2015 graduating class and is directed by Rod Carley, Rep 21’s Artistic Director and Coordinator of Canadore’s Theatre Arts program.

“I am thrilled to be directing, designing, and adapting this production,” said Carley. “The graduating students participate in building our production from the first rehearsal to the last performance. These young actors learn to craft their skills with exuberance, energy and a fierce longing for the chance to achieve the impossible.”

Once again, in lieu of charging admission, the theatre company will be collecting financial donations in support of the gathering place of North Bay. Audience members attending the Capitol Centre who donate over $20 will also receive special issue “Cecil’s Bucks” which have been provided by Cecil’s Eatery and Beer Society.

Rep 21 is a one-of-a-kind theatre company that gives the graduating class of Canadore’s Theatre Arts program an opportunity to work alongside industry-trained professional actors, directors and instructors. The graduates have spent the past six consecutive semesters training in acting, scene study, movement, speech, voice, improvisation, clowning, and musical theatre, all of which culminate in this final production showcasing their skills and talent.

Graduates will be combining voice, movement and scene study onstage from July 22 through July 25 at the Capitol Centre, starting at 7:30 p.m.; and July 29 through August 1 at the Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, Ont.
