The local Francophone community is mourning the loss of one of its most popular leaders.

Lou Gagne passed away on Thursday, her family announced through social media.

Mayor Al McDonald posted a tribute to Gagne, saying she was a very special person who made a difference, brought people together, made friends easily and made things happen.

“Today we learned of her passing and it came as a shock.” McDonald wrote on social media.

“Our community lost a quiet leader and someone that was well-liked and respected. Lou brought people together. This is a sad day for our family and the community. If you didn’t know Lou or had not met her, you truly missed out. Today, July 2nd, 2020, the City of North Bay lost an ambassador, a friend, a leader and caring person. God Speed Lou”

Gagne was well-known for her efforts organizing Le Carnaval des Compagnons locally. She also had a passion for local sports and was the marketing manager for the Junior 'A' North Bay Skyhawks for five years from 2002 to 2007.
