Firefighters and homeowner team up to put out chimney fire

'It looks like it was on the outside, blew up the outside into the attic bit'

A quick-thinking homeowner and swift work by North Bay firefighters saved a home along Peninsula Road in North Bay this morning.

The fire call came in around 6:30 a.m.

Platoon Chief Mike Souter believes the fire started in a chimney of the home located on the shores of Trout Lake.

"It looks like it was on the outside, blew up the outside into the attic bit. The homeowner was great, he got out with his hose and put it out from the outside but when we got here we had to extinguish a bit more in the attic and then it got into the floor.

Firefighters spent just over an hour extinguishing the blaze and saved the house. No one was injured as two residents could be seen bundled in blankets outside the home as firefighters put out hot spots.

"The guys did well, they got up and made sure the fire that was in the chimney was out but the homeowner did a good job too by cooling it down right off the bat. He saved the house and there is a bit of damage but nothing that can't be replaced.

No word on the cost of the damages to the home.
