Friends of La Vase Portages hosted voyageurs of all ages across the historic canoe route this past weekend and enjoyed travelling the Brandy Lake Portage only recently added to the public ownership under the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority.

While some of the participants have made the crossing from Trout Lake to Lake Nipissing several times, most of the paddlers were new to the portages and were simply interested in learning more about the history of the portages and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

Record low water levels from lack of recent rain fall made some sections of the route more like a hiking trail than a canoe route while the water lilies and purple arrowhead flowers were all at peak colour in the Perron's pond and Coopers Lake areas.
