Voodoos pull out comeback shootout win over Cubs

Reyth Smith scored in the fifth round of the shootout as the Powassan Voodoos edged the Greater Sudbury Cubs 3-2 at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Community Sports Complex on Monday afternoon to complete the comeback Voodoos win.

Voodoos goalie Patrick Charette made 31 saves in the win. He was especially sharp in the opening period as he turned away all 15 first period shots he faced. 

Late in the first, the Voodoos Alex Little got a loose puck and raced down the right wing and beat Cubs goalie Noah Beaulne for a shorthanded goal which made it 1-0 Voodoos.

Just over 5 minutes into the second the Cubs Ethan Larmand took a pass from Josh Kavanaugh at the top of the left circle and beat Voodoos goalie Patrick Charette to make it 1-1.

Late in the second the Cubs Hudson Chitaroni converted on a nice back door pass from Chris Innes on the right side which beat Charette and made it 2-1 Cubs after two periods of play.

Late in the game with Charette pulled Tucker Shields got a pass in the slot from Alex Case to tie it 2-2 with 1:56 remaining as he shoveled a quick shot by Beaulne.

After a scoreless five-minute overtime, the game went to the five-round shootout.

The Voodoos Alex Case and the Cubs Nolan Newton also converted on the shootout before Smith got the clinching goal.
