Unsafe building order issued for Auntie Jane's (New photos and video)

The north end of the building will remain closed and access restricted, however, stores in the south end remain open

No-one was injured in the partial collapse of a roof on a strip mall on the Lakeshore Drive overpass last night, but the north end of the structure has been closed and access restricted under an unsafe building order issued by the City building department.

At 6:30 yesterday evening fire crews responded to a report of a roof collapse at 725 Main Street East.

The plaza is the home to Auntie Jane's Restaurant.

"Upon arrival, firefighting personnel found that the roof on the west side of the structure had collapsed," says Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders. "Firefighters were able to confirm that there was nobody trapped in the structure and that there were no injuries as a result of the collapse. Utilities to the building were secured and the area surrounding the building restricted from entry for risk of further collapse."

Saunders says the call came in from a passerby who noticed the damage.

The north end of the building will remain closed and access restricted, however, stores in the south end remain open.

Snow load on roofs has been a concern locally during this above average snowfall we've had.

Two weeks ago six greenhouses at Laport's Nursery collapsed from the load.
