Restaurant roof collapses due to snow

The extreme winter is taking its toll on another local business today.

The extreme winter is taking its toll on another local business today.

North Bay Fire crews responded to a call around 6:30 p.m. after reports that a large section of a roof on Main Street East near the overpass has collapsed.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says the call came in from a passerby who noticed the damage.

It is believed the restaurant was closed at the time of the collapse.

“I suspect it’s the snow load on the building, thankfully it’s after the restaurant is closed, as you can see there’s substantial damage here, thankfully everyone is safe,” Saunders told Rogers Radio’s Richard Coffin on Tuesday night.

“We’ve secured the building, we’ve secured the utilities, but a reminder that it’s been a heavy winter this year.”

Tuesday’s roof collapse is not the first North Bay business impacted by the heavy snow load.

Late last week, all six of Laporte’s Nursery and Garden Centre greenhouses collapsed under the heavy snow with damage estimated to be as much as $200,000.
