20th Annual Trojan Parade For Cancer

Event details: Tues. May 14, 2013 (raindate Wed. May 15, 2013) 9:10 am - 11:00 am

The cheque presentations to the Canadian Cancer Society and Camp Oochigeas (a year round camp for children and teens battling cancer) will occur at 10:30 am at the Waterfront Bandshell

West Ferris Secondary School students along with Silver Birches Intermediate School students will join together to walk from the schools to the Kiwanis Waterfront Bandshell to present their cheques to the local organizations and celebrate this year’s fundraising efforts

Key highlights of the Parade this Year:
To help celebrate the 20th year of the event, the young lady; Stacey Saucier (nee Whittaker) who started this event in honour of her grandfather (Ken Whittaker Sr) will be returning to the school to walk with the students to the waterfront and will address the crowd during the cheque ceremony.

The theme this year as chosen by the students is “Hunt for the Cure” and a special commemorative T shirt has been designed and sold to all of the students and staff.

Our goal this year is $20,000 in honour of the 20 years this event has been running. Extra money has been raised throughout the year by unique fundraising activities such as selling popcorn at lunch, candy jar draws, pasta sales, dressdown days, a Zumbathon, the annual staff/celebrity student dodge ball game and the selling of paper daffodils which have been personalized to honour a family member or friend. These daffodils have been hung behind glass in the main hall to show who some of the people are who we are dedicating our walk to this year. This year, one of our own students is presenting battling leukemia and is currently in treatment at CHEO (Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario)

For the 2nd year, a number of staff and students will cut off between 8-10 inches of their hair and donate it to the “Locks for Love” initiative which takes the donated hair and makes wigs for people undergoing chemotherapy . This year we have 3 local hair dressers (Toni Austin and Shayna Lacourciere from Vida Salon and Lynne Longpre) have donated their time and skills to assist in this activity.

Also at the ceremony will be former Trojan staff and alumni who have been involved in the Parade for Cancer over the years. We are encouraging all Trojan alumni who have been involved in this event in the past years to come out to the waterfront on May 14 and help us celebrate this special year!

Over the past 19 years, the Trojans have raised over $186, 000 in the fight against Cancer.
