Severe thunderstorm watch issued by Environment Canada

Large hail up to toonie size possible with as much as 50 mm of rain within an hour

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch issued for the following areas;:

  •    Greater Sudbury and vicinity, Ont. 
  •    Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake, Ont. 
  •    Temiskaming Shores - Temagami, Ont. 
  •    North Bay - West Nipissing, Ont. 
  •    Manitoulin - Blind River - Killarney, Ont. 


Environment Canada states that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain.

"Large hail up to 3 cm in diameter or up to toonie size,' said Environment Canada in the Watch.

"Locally heavy rainfall up to 50 mm within an hour."

Environment Canada believes the storm will start late this afternoon into early tonight.

"Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," Environment Canada continued. 

"Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors." 

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
