Tory soldiers on

Ontario Conservatives gave beleaguered Party Leader John Tory a lukewarm endorsement to continue to lead the party during a weekend convention in London, Ontario this weekend.

Over 1,300 delegates gave Tory a 67 per cent endorsement in a confidence vote at the annual meeting Saturday, which in turn ends the need for a leadership convention.

Initially Tory told members that that the vote results, 874 in favour of remaining as leader and 433 seeking a review, may not be enough for him to continue and that he needed time to consider his future. Three hours later Tory stunned delegates by declaring his intention to remain in leadership role and soldier on.

"The party has spoken and I think it's time to move on," Tory told delegates Sunday.

Tory supporters say he has a tough job ahead, and it is important for him to run in a by-election, win a seat and get into the legislature and quiet his critics.
