Many stores across North Bay are preparing for scores of shoppers as Black Friday approaches.

The day after US Thanksgiving has become a major shopping phenomenon across the United States and Canada. It’s considered the first day of the Christmas Shopping season and has now become a marketing gold mine with thousands of shoppers targeting November 23rd as a day to take advantage of the sale prices.

According to Black Friday Global, about 71 percent of Canadians will take part in Black Friday this year.

Jordanna Grant is the Marketing Director at Northgate Shopping Centre.

“Black Friday is always exciting here at Northgate,” said Grant.

“It really has turned into Black Friday weekend or Black Friday week in many cases with a huge amount of sales happening at basically all of our retailers.”

Grant expects the local shopping centre to be packed on Friday as the interest in Black Friday continues to rise.

“It has been popular for a few years now and does not look like it will be slowing down any time soon,” she said.

“People love the hype, it gets them into the holiday spirit and also allows them to get some really great deals on gifts or items for themselves.”

Black Friday is starting to compete with Boxing Day as the best day or week to shop.

“It has become extremely popular and seems to grow each year and although Boxing Day is still a very busy shopping day black Friday seems to have surpassed it with many sales starting prior to and exceeding Friday itself,” she said.

Like many stores, Northgate Shopping Centre is offering some unique deals and contests connected to Black Friday.
