Soup Kitchen Numbers Out For October

Volunteers at North Bay’s Community Soup Kitchen served a total of 2,048 meals to Neighbours-in-Need during the month of October.

The kitchen served an average of 93 meals per day throughout October, a slight decrease from September’s average of 98 meals per day, which brings the total number of meals served since the opening of the facility in September of 2003 to 64,799.

The demographic break down for the number of meals served at The Gathering Place during October:

- 1,332 were served to adults (aged 25-60)

- 425 were served to seniors

- 237 were served to young adults between the ages of 16 and 25 years of age

- 15 pre-schoolers

- 39 youngsters under the age of 16

The Kitchen staff reports the highlight of the month was the traditional Thanksgiving dinner served on Monday, Oct. 9. Volunteers served 143 meals over the course of the day, and broke the record for the single-day number of people served at The Gathering Place.

Staff also note the number of seniors visiting the kitchen on Thanksgiving was up significantly.

The Gathering Place accepts debit, Visa and Master Card donations. It is located at 392 Algonquin Avenue and serves a hot, nutritious lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
