The McGuinty government is helping tenants with short-term rent arrears by allocating $112,740 to the rent bank program in Nipissing.

“Our Provincial Rent Bank Program has assisted thousands of tenants to avoid eviction and remain in their home,” Nipissing MPP Monique Smith said. “By increasing funding of this important program for the second year in a row, we’re helping to ensure the housing stability of more tenants who are at risk of homelessness.”

The 112,740 allocation to Nipissing is part of over $4.8 million in funding distributed today among rent banks across Ontario.

Bill White, CAO of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board said: “It is great news for the District of Nipissing Social Services Board that the Provincial Government will be replenishing the Rent Bank with new funding of $112,000. LIPI, the Rent Bank Administrator will receive the funds from our Board and will be able to continue to provide assistance to low income people who may face eviction or having difficulty in securing safe and affordable rental housing. This amount is close to double the previous allocations and recognizes the high need for this type support for citizens in our District who are at risk of homelessness.”

The Provincial Rent Bank Program promotes housing stability by assisting tenants to avoid eviction for non-payment of rent, as short-term arrears is the most common reason tenants lose their homes and end up in shelters.

“It is wonderful to have a local MPP who truly understands the need for strong social programs,” Lana Mitchell, Executive Director of L.I.P.I. said” MPP Smith continues to not only advocate for the most vulnerable in our community but works along side us to ensure that their needs are met.”

Tenants can apply for financial assistance from a rent bank no more than once in two years, and receive maximum assistance for two months’ rental arrears.

In 2004, the program began with an initial allocation of $10 million distributed among municipalities in Ontario. Since an additional investment of $4 million in March 2006, over 8,000 households have received assistance and avoided eviction.
