One hundred JK and SK Alliance Alligators from Alliance French Immersion Public School will bring their food drive collection to Chippewa Intermediate Secondary on Thursday, December 17, at 9:30 to combine them with Chippewa’s Salvation Army Food drive donations. The students will walk from Alliance to Chippewa along High Street, with the goods in sleds and wagons. Secondary students will meet them half way and welcome them into the Raider foyer and cafeteria. The junior students will be treated to hot chocolate and sing French Christmas carols with senior French Immersion students before being walked back to Alliance.

The two schools have been working on a joint Salvation Army food drive, a long standing Raider tradition, for several weeks. It was kicked off with a combined grade 7 and 8 dance for both schools which raised $275 to purchase food items to be donated.

Mrs. Carmen Robitaille, and the other JK /SK teaches at Alliance, used the food collection help others but it also helped students practice sorting and classifying according to food groups as well as letter recognition.

Chippewa has been supporting the Salvation Army food Bank for over 25 years with an annual in-school food drive. This year all Raiders have stepped up their efforts. They have run dances, teamed with Alliance and are hosting a concert featuring the band Odnammoc. Students can attend the concert if they bring in a non perishable food item. Chippewa Intermediate Secondary School is also encouraging the community to drop off donations before Thursday.

Student Council Food Drive co-chairman, Ian Hall says this year is different. “This year we have to step up the number and magnitude of events to help accommodate the needs in the community during current economic times.”
