Chippewa Secondary School’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Business students recently competed in the provincial DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Competition held in Toronto. Results from the two-day event showed that Chippewa business students are benefiting from the opportunities arising from the SHSM Business program at Chippewa.

The High Skills Major program gives students valuable work experience in Chippewa’s school store (Joe’s Trading Post) and further develops their business skills through cooperative education placements, participation in contests and hands-on class activities. Students follow an approved Ministry of Education pathway to college, university or the workplace based on each student’s particular area of interest in business.

The provincial DECA competition is a great way for students to transfer classroom learning into real-life business scenarios since they select events based on their experience in courses such as marketing, accounting or economics. Each event at the provincial competition is comprised of approximately 150 students writing a one-hour 100 question multiple choice exam, analyzing case studies and presenting their ideas to judges within a limited time frame. DECA has approximately 6000 student members across Canada and the U.S.

At the DECA awards ceremony, a top 10 medal was presented to Rebecca Duguay who excelled in the Financial Analysis exam. She and her partner Erica Daniel (who narrowly missed a medal coming 12th in the exam) finished a notable 26th overall. Another successful team result was from Matt Caruso and Kevin Miller who finished in the top half of their Sports and Entertainment Marketing event. In the individual events, Shannon Hueston and George Wang both finished in the top third overall in their respective Apparel & Accessories Marketing and Business Services Marketing categories.
